| Just four years after it opened, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway has become one of the top stops on the NASCAR circuit. More than 250,000 people participate annually in events surrounding the Winston Cup Las Vegas 400 - making it the biggest sports spectacle in Nevada. Drivers and race fans agree the $200 million speedway is one of the finest racing venues in America. Opened in 1996, the facility covers 1,500 acres and includes a 1.5 mile main track and seven other tracks. |
There is room to park 60,000 cars at the
Speedway. More than 600,000 tons of concrete and 10 million linear feet of steel were used to build the Speedway. Built by Las Vegas gaming entrepreneurs William G. Bennett and Ralph Englestad, the track was purchased in 1998 by raceway giant Speedway Motorsports, Inc. and its chairman, Bruton Smith. SMI owns and operates the Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sears Point Raceway and the Texas Motor Speedway. |
